Today’s reflective practice topic is ‘demonstrate respect’. Demonstrating respect means genuinely care for others. Showing you care. Respecting the dignity of every person and every role. Treating everyone with respect, especially those who can’t do anything for you. Showing kindness in the little things. Not fake caring and not attempting to be ‘efficient’ with people.

Reflective practice is defined by Schön (1983) as a continuous dynamic process that involves thoughtfully, honestly and critically considering all aspects of professional experience and applying knowledge to practice.

Reflection is more than thinking and discussing. It is also about deconstructing, unpacking or pulling things apart to gain a better understanding. It is about seeing connections and appreciating different perspectives. Reflection can help you to:

  • Recognise and continue good practices
  • Change and improve what is not working well
  • Challenge practices that are taken for granted
  • Deliver learning at the point of care
  • Monitor all aspects of practice on an ongoing basis
  • Know when you need to find more information
  • Let people know when you need support
  • Uplift a focus on safe, high quality consumer care

You can find the full guide to reflective practice here.

The sessions are hosted by Rachael Wass, CEO of Meaningful Ageing Australia.

Facilitated by either Rachael or regular experienced Spiritual Care Practitioners from our MAA Community.
