This month, Dr Pei-Chun Ko talks to us about loneliness and social engagement in Western and Asian communities. Dr Ko has extensive research across health and ageing; you can learn more about her research here: Pei-Chun Ko – Between Two Cultures (wordpress.com)

Dr. Pei-Chun Ko is a lecturer in Sociology in the School of Social Sciences, Monash University.

She is a sociologist with expertise in ageing and health, social and economic participation of older adults, intergenerational relationships and ageing families, life course, and social networks. Health and social inclusion of older adults against the backgrounds of changing families and sociocultural structures in Asian countries have been her long-term research interests.

With a fully funded scholarship from the German Research Foundation, she obtained her PhD from the University of Cologne, Germany with magna cum laude. Prior to relocating to Australia, she did her postdoc and then she was a research fellow with the joint appointment from the prestigious Asia Research Institute (ARI) and Centre for Family and Population Research (CFPR) at National University of Singapore. She then joined Singapore University of Social Sciences as lecturer and later senior lecturer.

Her work has been published in internationally acclaimed journals, including Journal of Gerontology: Social Sciences, Journal of Aging and Health, Social Science & Medicine, etc. She was the guest editor of Social Science & Medicine for the special issue – Contextualizing Productive Aging in Asia (2019) which provided empirical evidence of key determinants and health outcomes of social and productive engagement (working, caregiving, volunteering, etc.) among older adults in 10 Asian societies.

She is now serving on the editorial boards of Journal of Family Studies and Journal of Sociology as associate editor. She is also in the board of the Research Committee (RC06) Family Research in the International Sociological Association (ISA) as secretary and treasurer.

Trained as a quantitative researcher, she has not only applied quantitative methods, but also has employed quantitative-driven mixed method design in her research projects.

She has an academic website: https://peichunko.wordpress.com
